Independent Learning and Study

This is a catalog of my independent learning research and inspirations.

Commercial Photography covers a very broad range of genres in photography from product, portrait, fashion, food, even landscape. Essentially commercial photography is aimed at commerce and business, designed to make the end user of an image financial gain. We can say commercial photography has been around from the beginning of modernism. Advertising is a huge part of our consumer culture and photography plays a very large part in consumerism and our need to buy. Commercial photography is predominantly about aesthetics, stirring something deep in the viewer through their eyes and creating a want and a need to purchase.
Business will spend a large amount of time in finding a photographer to create suitable imagery to enhance their sales, choosing a photographer will be based on their style and imagination, their creative talent and technical ability to produce the right feel and emotion in a shot.
As a photographer we may be guided by a specific brief and direction of the client, or we may have full creative input and design images that meet our own creativity. Using our own creative direction doesn’t come without it’s issues, we have a moral obligation to the viewer, discrimination, hostile influences, cultural awareness and the humility not to cause offence, having said that it is impossible to please everyone.
We also have to remember the legal implications, be aware of country law, copyright, model release forms and what is written on it, liability and the use of a photograph, plagiarism( not copying or using somebody else’s work as our own), Infringement, publishing and distribution, right of Privacy, Appropriation, Intrusion, Public Disclosure, Property Release and Right to Publicity. Insurance is inevitable and is a must for your own protection. It is an essential obligation not only to ourselves for personal protection but to the industry as well, and to be aware of all of these aspects before undertaking any work.
Practitioners in photography influence in many different ways, style, concept, direction, technical practice, narrative, and creative imagination. As a commercial photographer it is vital to create a style that is individual, this may come from a collection of influences that have motivated and moulded our individual aesthetical approach.
My personal influences come from a broad spectrum of photographers who have different qualities and approaches to their imagery. Low key, High key, light aesthetic and manipulation, post production, Vision and approach and image production.

Style and aesthetics are a very personal thing,, from a commercial aspect we have to appeal to the desired market, influences

I find I am influenced by many different photographers and views and styles:

Rob Lawson

As a leading global drinks photographer,Rob Lawson undersstands current trends and has to adapt each shoot according to the atmosphere required. I enjoy his use of light and focal depth, each shot gives a different ambiance and high in contrast. As a photographer I think it's critical to be able to create and evoke an emotion, especially when a product sales depends on the photography. He does this using effective staged shots, mostly low key but stunning use of light.

Rob White

Rob White's style is very High key, great detail and although quite minmalistic and no fancy staged set ups, his photography is quite direct and straight to the point. His photography tells an imediate story. I like his honest approach, simple lighting but very effective from an advertising aspect.

Bill Cahill

Bill Cahill is probably the most influencial product and liquid photographer to day, his use of light to enhance probably the two most difficult subjects (being glass and liquid) is astounding. Using both low key and high key methods he creates advertising shots that really do surprise the viewer. Although post production is used, I really do admire his creative vision.

Robert Wilson

For me Robert Wilson captures the soul in people, his portrait photography is stunning. His approach is honest, they say a persons eyes can tell a thousand storys, this I believe when you look at his portrait work. Commisioned to photograph celebrities, he refuses to create typical prety portraits, but emphasises an individuals soul and bares all in his photography.

Peter Leverman

Although very much a landscape and environmental photographer, Peters work has become very popular with an almost Gregory Crewdson approach. His imagery is very colorful, creating atmosphere using space and their surroundings. His images are crisp and sharp and generate great depth using hyper focal techniques, allowing the viewer to engage in the whole of the photograph and gain a true perspective to the surroundings.

David Ryle

David Ryles portraits have inspired, ,his understanding of using light to create a mood is brilliant in my opinion. Using his surroundings and developing light to enhance features in a person has become a personal goal for me to achieve.

My Personal Images

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           The Welder

The Shot:      Taken in a garage with limited lighting, I used off camera flash to create light from the side as the welding torch illuminated the front of the subject. Shot on 50mm lens as this was an environmental portrait.

Evaluation:  The image speaks for itself in my opinion. I works well although I do have a slight issue with the one large orange spark that detracts the eye a little. The tonality in the image is good and the blue illuminated light really sets off the image.

Learning Outcome This is the first time I have used off camera flash for this type of shot, using high speed sync helped to tone down back light and create more atmosphere in the shot.

Image:           The Christmas Market Trader

The Shot:      Taken at a Christmas Market, I really wanted to capture a sense of desperation in making money at such an important time of the year. I used a speed light on camera to add light. Focusing on the trader with the lowest aperture I could to create blur in the foreground.

Evaluation:  The image has a sense of loneliness with the soul trader looking quite solemn. I feel the shot works well and gives a completely different feel that we would expect from Christmas.

Learning Outcome A very busy market proved difficult to get the shot, the biggest thing was patience. I didn’t want to stage the shot as I wanted it completely natural.

Reflective Objects

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           The Vase

The Shot:      Taken in the studio, I wanted to create black and white image for this shot with limited light. Using two soft boxes either side of the vase to create the reflections on each side.

Evaluation:  The tonality in the  shot works really well, although on reflection maybe I shoud have made the reflection on the right longer to reach the bottom of the vase.. Also more consideration to the space at the top and the bottom of the vase.

Learning Outcome Working in the studio really takes me out of my comfort zone, working with reflective objects is really difficult to manage the shards of light you want and get the correct positioning you require. More consideration needed to be taken on space in the shot, if this was for an advertising brief where would text go?

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           Wine and Grapes

The Shot:      I wanted to try an outdoor commercial shot that may be suitable for advertising. I chose wine as my reflective object and decided to use grapes to coincide, On the label of the bottle are trees so I opted for a more rustic approach and shot the image in a forest.  I set the bottle up on a rock and with consideration to the reflections and the water I composed the image to resemble a country scene. Using a speedlight on the ground to inject light onto the front of the bottle. I deliberately left empty space at the top and bottom of the bottle to allow for advertising text.

Evaluation:  The image is colour rich, with the help of autumn colours. The text is clear and you can easily recognise the branding. I do find the shard of light on the top right neck of the bottle a little distracting, although it could be photoshopped out, or in hindsight used card to eliminate the light. The bottle could maybe have been move further to the left to create more space on the right of the bottle.

Learning Outcome I really tried to create a very considered piece of work, with reference to the branding and it’s surroundings.

I deliberately left empty space at the top of the bottle to allow for advertising text.

Evaluation:  The image is colour rich, with the help of autumn colours. In hindsight I would have removed the branch as I don’t think it adds a great deal to the image. Also the amount of blur in the shot is a little distracting to the right hand side of the shot. The text is clear and you can easily recognise the branding.

Learning Outcome I really tried to create a very considered piece of work, with reference to the branding and it’s surroundings, although I do believe the shot could be improved with a different aperture and removal of the twig.

Image:           Apple

The Shot:      Taken in the studio, I wanted to explore light on a colourful object. I osed a single light setup to throw light onto the apple, using foam board as curtains to direct the light and fall off to illuminate the top and side of the subject.

Evaluation:  Subtle is how I would describe the image, gentle light to illuminate and the stork of the apple is lit with consideration to the image. If I have one criticism to the shot it would be the harsher light to the centre of the reflection.

Learning Outcome Working in the studio really takes me out of my comfort zone, working with reflective objects is really difficult to manage the shards of light you want and get the correct positioning you require.

Image:           Farmhouse Lunch

The Shot:      Taken in the studio, I wanted to commercial type food image that could be used for advertising. Using a two light set up to illuminate the subject, I intended to make a colourful and appetising image. My first difficulty was the tomatoes as I wanted them to look wet and fresh by spraying them with glucose and water, my issue was the amount of harsh reflection off the lighting, so in the end I used coppydex to tone down the reflection.

Evaluation:  The tonality in the  shot works really well, although on reflection maybe I shoud have made the reflection on the right longer to reach the bottom of the vase.. Also more consideration to the space at the top and the bottom of the vase.

Learning Outcome Working with food is quite difficult as the heat off the lights tends to dry your food and make it look unappetising. Food design is an art form in it self. To make an image appealing the food has to be arranged to look appertising. The more time you spend arranging the food, the quicker the food starts to dry out. Speed is essential working with this type of food.

The Shot:      Taken in the studio, I wanted to do commercial type food image that could be used for advertising although I wanted to make it quite abstract in appearance. Using a two light set up to illuminate the subject, I intended to make a colourful and appetising image. I used small softboxes at either side of the bowls to get a uniform light throughout the image.

Evaluation:  I am quite happy with the outcome of this as it something completely different to what I am used to trying.

Learning Outcome Creating something quite abstract was interesting as I had to be quite considered in my focal length and visual awareness.

Image:           Sushi

The Shot:      Taken in the studio, I wanted to do commercial type food image that could be used for advertising although I wanted to make it quite modern in appearance. Using a two light set up to illuminate the subject, I intended to make a colourful and appetising image. I used small softboxes at either side of the bowls to get a uniform light throughout the image. I took the image on an angle to reate a mouch more modern feel. The matting was used to try an create a metallic finish.

Evaluation:  I am quite happy with the outcome of this as it something completely different to what I am used to trying.

Learning Outcome Creating something quite abstract was interesting as I had to be quite considered in my focal length and visual awareness. The Sushi did dry out under the light quite quickly so I had to try and keep it moist with water spray.

Image:           Jack Daniels

The Shot:      Taken in the studio, I wanted to do commercial type image that could be used for advertising although I wanted to make it quite warm in appearance. I set up two lights behind the subject and shuttered them off to create the rim lighting. Using 1 light to illuminate the background with a snoot, comb and orange gel to soften the light and give the image some depth. I lit the front with one light and a snoot directing the light with on the label to emphasise the brand. I also placed a white cut out directly behind the bottle to throw light through to the front of the bottle to illuminate the liquid inside.
Evaluation:  I am quite happy with the outcome of this as it something completely different to what I am used to trying. The image is warm and inviting. If I was to do it again I would have introduced something in the background as there is a lot of dead space in the shot.

Learning Outcome This type of advertising shot interests me as you have to play with light to get the finished article. Designing this type of shot is also interesting because you have to have an image in mind to create it.

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           Fashion 1

The Shot:      I was commissioned to do a fashion shoot for St Georges Mall in Preston, having never shot fashion before I was a little nervous. Light was very mixed in the venue which made it difficult. The event was very fast paced and as the only official photographer I did a lot of running around to get the shots required. I used on camera speedlight to eliminate shadows on the face and illuminate the area to give it a little more punch.

Evaluation:  I am quite happy with the outcome of this as it something completely different to what I am used to trying. The image is modern and quite standard to the fashion industry.

Learning Outcome This type of brief is very very fast, quickly thinking on the spot is a must to achieve diversity in the collection of images.

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           Architecture 1

The Shot:      I wanted to try something a little different and whilst out shooting I came across this outbuilding in a field. I thought it may be quite interesting to illuminate inside with the  torch on my phone. Using a speedlight I walked around the building and popped the flash in various places whilst using a long shutter speed to give me time to manoeuvre around the building.

Evaluation:  I am quite happy with the outcome of this as it something completely different to what I am used to trying.  The outbuilding is illuminated well and the darkness allows the subject to stand out in the image.

Learning Outcome Using “Flash Pop” was quite interesting as you have to be aware of your distance from your subject and use the light fall off to manage the amount of light you require. Also making sure you do not accidentally turn the speedlight towards the camera.

The Shot:      This is Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire, internally this building was amazing. I set up my tripod and composed the shot I wanted. I found the shapes really interesting and wanted to capture the abstract feel to the building. Light was unusual with the light at the back of the building a great visual in the shot.

Evaluation:  The image is a typical architectural shot using the abstract design to stand out. Although in hindsight I may have altered the white balance to remove the amount of yellow.

Learning Outcome Really just to use different Kelvins in camera to try and manage toneal ranges in my photography when confronted with such an unusual light.

The Shot:      This is Ribblehead Viaduct in Yorkshire, astro photography is something I have recently started to explore. The Viaduct made a great subject matter with the Milky Way overhead. Using a 20mm I knew my exposure time would be approximately 30 seconds before I picked up movement in the stars.
I decided to step back and do a panoramic of the viaduct and took 6 different shots, 3 of the viaduct and 3 more of the night sky. I also set my kelvins in camera to 3500 to allow a slightly colder sky.

Evaluation:  Probably a little too blue, so I would perhaps in hindsight use a higher kelvin, 5000 maybe.

Learning Outcome Really just to use different Kelvins in camera to try and manage tonal ranges in my photography when confronted with such an unusual light.

Post Production     6 images nitted togeather in photoshop with added Contrast and clarity.

The Shot:      This is Whitehaven Lighthouse, I have a fascination with lighthouses.. This was taken at about 9 o clock in the morning, the sun was still rising and gave a really beautiful light. Sea mist was just dissipating.

Evaluation:  The tones in the image interested me, and for me personally an interesting image. Maybe slightly over processed with clarity looking at it now.

Learning Outcome Exploring tones and light is interesting, winter mornings can produce really colourful contrasting light, which can be beautiful when shooting outdoors.

Weddings

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           Wedding 1

The Shot:      Having shot a number of weddings I was asked to shoot my first Indian wedding. This image shot at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel near Accrington.
With a lot of tungsten light I altered the White Balance and directed the shot. Indian wedding photography is very rich in colour and after speaking to the client I understood this was what they wanted.
I used on camera flash to add light and reduce shadows.

Evaluation:  A difficult shot, with the light, mirror. The client was very happy with this image, the tones and light work really well with the wood in the image, although there is some flare of the chandelier.

Learning Outcome Dificult situation, trying to be as quick as I can so the subjects don’t get restless and trying to get the settings right in camera so as not to ruin the shot, luckily I had done a pre visit to the hotel to check image locations etc…

Promotion Material

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation

Image:           Promotional Material 1

The Shot:      Whilst on holiday to Forrest Holidays I took this image on top of a hot tub. Using off camera flash to create light from the left of picture. I was trying to produce an image that could be used for promotional/advertising purposes.

Evaluation:  The image has since been used by Forrest Holidays. I achieved what I wanted, although I do think that maybe a little too much contrast has been added.

Learning Outcome To shoot everything, try different approaches and show your images!!! Forrest Holidays really like this shot, enough to pay for it!!!

With this brief I wanted to approach a number of commercial directions in oreder to be able to evaluate  the commercial sector from as many angles as possible. I found my own personal experience and thought process better suited to outdoor photography (None studio)using strobes and the surroundings to create more impactfull images. I personally feel more creative out of the studio and it has taken this exercise to relise my way forward.
I prefer creative freedom and I do believe in the studio I feel restricted, i'm not quite sure why, may be it was the lack of materials I would have liked to use but could not afford to do full studio set ups for each individual shot. Approaching various venues to organize shoots left me a little deflated as many of the venues were unhelpful and did not want the disruption.
In the future I would like to do commercial work to earn a living BUT my heart lies in Landscape work.
